Hogtown Vegan
A quick post about a find back home before heading back to Europe. As I've mentioned in other posts, knowing all the reasons to go vegetarian, I've always toyed with the idea and am always keen on trying new places that pop up. So when I heard that the owners of my favorite burrito and vegan place, Hot Beans, opened a new joint that did vegan southern BBQ, I knew I had to give it a try.

Recommended by my friend, I got the mac and cheese and for curiosity's sake, I also ordered the pulled pork sandwich. The mac and cheese was bang on, and as my friend who recommended it told me, "even better than most real mac and cheeses." Sadly, the pulled pork didn't follow suit. TVP works very well in a burrito where it imitates steak, but fails to mimic the stringy, flossy texture that makes pulled pork "pulled". Instead, tiny chopped up spongy pieces of TVP fall all over the place when you eat it. Lastly, they didn't toast the bun, so it was cold and tough, rather than warm and soft.

Despite the pulled pork not being that great, I would give Hogtown Vegan another try, this time keeping in mind that TVP does have its limitations in imitating meat. My friend who recommended the mac and cheese also recommended the philly cheese steak. I can see that being good. : )
